LESKOVAC 2012

Ah bon.

PIERCE

After the VINTAGE KONRAD experiment proved to be a success, the next project was immediately set in motion. During last summer I broke my white Pilot PRERA, a splendid little pen. As GOULETS do not carry solid colored bodies, just the demonstrators, I checked the VANISHING POINT, a pen many like  for the convenience and smooth writing experience.

I can testify that all Pilot nibs I used have been great, but I simply cannot warm to idea of having the clip on the section. On the other hand, due to its click-action mechanism, VANISHING POINT has a specific nib unit; the nib, housing and converter make a combo-unit that can be purchased separately. Ideal as a heart of the new project, one I eventually named PIERCE.

SONY DSC

I’ve been searching for adequate parts for some time until I had a lucky break – it turned out that the handle of Rotring ART PEN makes a perfect base for the section. The original section of ART PEN then became a base for the barrel, and a pair of  cheap Chinese school pens again provided parts for new barrel and cap.

SONY DSCThe new section is tight-fit for the nib unit and holds it securely. The barrel, once screwed in, additionally grips it on top, preventing it from moving. The best part of securing the nib unit this way is that it can easily be disassembled for filling and cleaning. The cap is slip type and the shape is a mix of classic cigar and torpedo.

SONY DSC

But does it work? You bet.

SONY DSC

Filled with R&K SCABIOSA, the pen functions just fine.

SONY DSC

PIERCE is light, the elongated section is very comfortable and allows me to hold the pen further away from the nib. The typical sections on pens I often find too short, forcing me to grab the handle by the threads. No such problem here.

SONY DSC

To conclude, as a size reference, a group portrait with PLATINUM 3776, my usual sketch-pen of choice. But PIERCE might just give it a run for its money.

NOTE: Later I treated this drawing with a wash. Result can be seen in the post SCABIOSA .

VINTAGE KONRAD

You know how NATHAN TARDIFF encourages people to tinker with his fountain pens? Well I don’t think even he envisaged it to go this far :-) In one corner, there was NOODLER’S KONRAD whose brush tip wore out but the rest of the pen, especially the piston, worked well. On the other side, a warranted 14K semi-flex nib, along with ebonite feed and section from a tired vintage pen with ruined and unusable threads. Somewhere in the middle, a cheap Chinese school pen, a humble but proud donor of supporting parts.

2012 - VINTAGE KONRAD - ETAPE 01 - 01

Unscrewing the plastic part that holds the brush tip was a piece of cake. Of course, in NOODLER’S tradition it was meant to be user serviceable. To continue, a bit of sleeve-rolling and manufacturing was required, to thin the far part of the vintage section in order to fit into KONRAD. Once done, the cap had to be elongated with a piece of Chinese barrel, as the “newly made vintage” section wouldn’t fit anymore.

SONY DSC

Persistent sanding eventually made everyone join the party. The phase one was over.

SONY DSC

Now it was time to glue the parts tightly, fill the meeting points carefully so nothing would leak and smooth all the joints by new turns of sanding. The section is now slick and comfortable to hold. The clip was the casualty of this phase, as I decided to eventually put a new skin over the pen if it proves itself as a dependable hard working fellow.

SONY DSC

Filling it up with a dose of CARBON BLACK and off we go. Nothing drips or leaks so far – it even works as planned!

SONY DSC

To conclude, a group shot with the team that made this frankensteinisation possible.

WATERMAN 12

A neat little package arrived today with a vintage fountain pen in it – the WATERMAN 12 that I got from a fellow member ZED at FPN.  Inside, wrapped around the pen, his hand-written note embelished the deal. Special delivery, that is!

PICTOGRAMAX - FP - WATERMAN LETTER

Later in the evening I managed to squeeze a quick sketch to try out the nib. And it’s just what I have been searching for – extra fine, but not scratchy, flexible enough to provide solid bold strokes, but not loose to the point that it gets hard to control the hairlines. I did the drawing just by dipping the tip of the nib into CARBON BLACK bottle, as this beauty is an eyedropper and I have yet to learn to fill it without getting the leaks. Luckily, ZED also included two plastic fillers for ED pens. Great service!
